Late Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Over Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. (9/13/14) – An own goal by Manhattanville College with three minutes remaining in the match gave the Kean University women's soccer team a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Saturday. Goaltender KC Nunez earned her fifth-straight shutout and ran her overall scoreless streak to 521 minutes.

The Cougars dominated play during the match and outshot Manhattanville 21-3 in the game. Nunez was untested in the first half but made two saves in the second.

Sam Marchetti led Kean with three shots, including two shots on goal.

Valient goaltender Dolores Diemicke was also stellar on Saturday. She stopped 12 Kean shots and was only beaten on an own goal.

What finally separated the teams on the rainy afternoon was an own goal. Diemicke came out 20 yards to make a save, but the ball had so much backspin that it began trickling toward the open goal mouth. Two Manhattanville defenders both went for the ball, but the clearing attempts cancelled as the two players encumbered one another and allowed the ball to go over the line for the game-winning score. Kean's Allison Coca (pictured left) took the initial shot that led to the game-winning goal.

Kean is now 6-1, while Manhattinville fell to 1-4.

The Cougars will return home and open up NJAC play next Saturday at 5 p.m. against Rowan University at Kean Alumni Stadium.
