Union, N.J. (9/27/18) – The Kean University women's soccer team used two first-half tallies to even their overall and NJAC records by defeating New Jersey City University on Thursday evening.
The game was previously scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Jersey City, but flooding from this week's weather forced the postponement and relocation of the contest.
Senior Cori Dengel notched what would be the game winner in the 27th minute as she finished off a feed from both Lexy Monroy and Carley Garlasco. Monroy pushed the ball up midfield and found Garlasco who one-touched the ball to Dengel on the right. Dengel fired and found the upper left hand corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, rookie Emily Bretschneider took a ball that was passed from the defending 40 yard line off the foot of Dengel. She pushed forward and used the left post to net insurance.
Junior Casey McDonnell recorded her first win of the season in net. She stopped three shots in the shutout win. Cidney Lee-Sam registered nine saves in the loss for NJCU (4-5, 0-3 NJAC).
In total, Kean (3-3-3, 1-1-1 NJAC) outshot the Gothic Knights, 27-6, with both teams even on corner opportunities (3).
The Cougars return to NJAC action on Saturday when they host Rowan University at 11:30 a.m.
