ALLENTOWN, Pa. (2/2/19)- Tori Hayes set new school records in the 50 (34.52) and 100 (1:14.81) breast events as the Kean University women's swimming team defeated Cedar Crest College, 110-108 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars improve to 5-5 overall, while the Falcons fall to 5-4 overall.
"To go from 0-8 last season to 5-5 this season is an amazing accomplishment for this program", said Head Coach Chris Swenson. "Every week we continue to put up lifebests and with Hayes breaking two school records we are excited to see what we do in a few weeks when fully rested."
Hayes broke previous records set by Maryann Walburn and Maddalena Mustillo. Walburn set the record in the 50 (35.40) on Feb. 6th, 1989 and Mustillo (1:15.34) set the record in the 100 on Nov. 17th, 1998.
The Cougars won 14 out of the 15 events, despite only taking first place points in nine events. Hayes won two events along with Kristina Sullivan and Sarah Sissel. Sullivan posted the top times in the 200 free (2:11.65) and the 200 IM (2:31.15), while Sissel captured first in the 50 back (36.50) and the 100 back (1:17.11). Additionally, Darlene Holmes took first in the 50 free (27.31) and Molly Lasko posted the top time in the 100 fly (1:07.64).
Sissel, Hayes, Lasko, and Holmes all combined for a 2:05.95 time and a first-place finish in the 200-medley relay event.
Coach Swenson and the Cougars will return to action at Rutgers University in the Metropolitan Championships on Friday, Feb. 22 and Sat. Feb. 23rd.
