Union, N.J. (10/12/12) – The Kean University women's volleyball team picked up wins over Muhlenberg College and Manhattanville College in day one of the Kean Invitational on Friday evening at Harwood Arena.
In their first matchup of the day against Muhlenberg (12-8), the Cougars (18-6) earned a 3-1 win by the final scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20. In the nightcap, Kean topped Manhattanville (8-18) in straight sets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15.
After falling behind 1-0, Kean battled in close sets to take the 3-1 decision. Sophomore Aysia Peterson (pictured left) led all players with 17 kills on 30 swings (.467) while teammate Jen Espinal added 13 kills and eight digs. Senior Amanda Gonzalez recorded 11 kils with six digs and two assisted blocks as Alana Aranjo registered 48 assists. Junior Kaitlyn Hansen picked up nine kills with five aces and four total blocks.
For the Mules, sophomore Lindsey Gambocurta recorded a double-double 12 kills and 13 digs, as part of four players with double-digit kills on the day. Rookie Sarah Weyhmuller tallied 12 kills on 19 swings (.474) with four total blocks. Freshman setter Vanessa Pulice registered 40 assists.
In the nightcap, all 14 players saw action as Hansen tallied a team-high seven kills with four blocks and four aces. For the Valiants, rookie Patricia Alfonso collected a team-high six kills with four aces and 10 digs.
Kean returns to action on Saturday in day two of the Kean Invitational as they take on Alvernia University and the Polytechnic Institute of NYU.
