Women’s Volleyball Earns Day One Split

HOBOKEN, N.J. (9/18/15) – The Kean University women's volleyball team topped Arcadia University after falling to New York University on the first day of the Ducks Classic in Hoboken on Friday. The Cougars are now 8-5 on the year.

NYU 3, Kean 0

The opening set was tied at 17, but Kean scored four of the next five points to force the Violets to call timeout. Kean got to set point at 24-23, but was stymied by the NYU defense.

Facing set point themselves, Kean's Kendall Sonico had a dump over on two to make the score 25-25, but NYU rallied to take the next two points and therefore the first set, 27-25

The Cougars fell behind 6-1 in the second set, but scored six of the next seven to tie the score. Ultimately, however, the Violets gathered themselves to pull away for the 25-19 set two victory.

Kean could not get any traction in the match and fell in the finale 25-18. NYU raised its record to 6-5 with the win. Alexis Jackson and Shelby King led the Violets with 10 kills each.

Kean 3, Arcadia 1

With Kean up just 17-16 in the first set, the Cougars ripped off five-straight points with Nicollette Poveromo serving to go up 22-16. Points came on kills, blocks and errors as the Cougars were finally clicking.

Kassie Hernandez led the team in the first set with four kills and a .375 hitting percentage as the Cougars won 25-19. Kean was even more dominant in the second set, a 25-14 victory.

Arcadia took the third set in a 26-24 thriller. Sam Dulak got the final two kills for the Knights.

The Cougars took care of business in the fourth, pulling away for a 25-17 set win and the 3-1 match victory.

Lisa DeGroot had 15 digs and Hernandez had 13 for Kean. DeGroot also was tops on the team with three aces. The match's blocking numbers were heavily slanted toward Kean; the final count was 17-4.

Brett Harper led the Cougars with a .385 hitting percentage, and Sara Ridgway (pictured left) paced the team with 12.5 points on a whopping 10 blocks. Sonico had 18 assists and Poveromo finished with 14. Vikki Stec had nine kills to lead Kean in that department.
