UNION, N.J. (10/1/15) – The Kean University women's volleyball team swept Arcadia University after falling to Millikin University in a home doubleheader on Saturday. Following their big third-set comeback to cement the sweep against the Knights, the Cougars are now 15-16 on the season.
Kean had little trouble in the opening two sets against Arcadia, winning 25-12 and 25-18. Kassie Hernandez had a dozen kills in the match, while Nicollette Poveromo had 25 assists and Lisa DeGroot popped up 20 digs.
But in the third set, Kean found itself trailing 19-14 when DeGroot went back to serve. The Laguna Beach native served eight-straight points to flip the lead and put her team back in the driver's seat. In that run, Calli Scheuermann, Joelle Tondi, Sara Ridgway and Poveromo all had kills as the Cougars could seemingly do no wrong.
With the team trailing again 23-22, the Cougars forced an error to tie at 23. Then Poveromo and Ridgway combined on a bock to get to match point and Ridgway ended it with a solo roof on the next play to deliver the sweep.
Kean held Arcadia to a .035 attack percentage, out-blocked the visitors 11-3 and had eight aces against the Knights. Hernandez had three of those aces to lead the team there as well.
The Cougars fought hard against Milliken, but fell in three sets. In the opener, Kean and Milliken went back and forth to fight for the lead. After tying the score at 18-18, Milliken took the lead for good and ended the set 25-21. Ridgway had two blocks in the opening set, the second assisted by Vikki Stec. Brett Harper had five kills in the match.
The final line score against Milliken was 25-21, 25-10, and 15-15. Overall, Milliken lead in kills 41-23, digs 33-21 and aces 9-1. Erin Syversen led Big Blue with 14 kills.
The Cougars will remain home and return to NJAC play on Tuesday when they host Rowan University at 7 p.m.
