PITTSBURGH, Pa. (9/21/18)- The Kean University women's volleyball team dropped both matches to University of Mary Washington and Carnegie Mellon University on the Opening Day of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Friday evening.
Mary Washington 3, Kean 1 (21-25, 18-25, 25-21, 21-25)
Vikki Stec and Brett Harper combined for 28 kills as the Eagles of Mary Washington snapped Kean's six-match winning streak with a 3-1 defeat. UMW (9-4) took the first two sets before the Cougars (10-4) hit .452 and captured the third set. Harper, Stec and Zoe Strozewski combined for 12 kills and no errors in the third set victory.
In the fourth set, Kean mounted a near comeback after surrendering an early lead and trailed 23-21 after three straight kills by Harper. The Eagles pulled away with back-to-back kills.
Leslie Walters and Savannah Powers both finished with 13 kills each for UMW.
Carnegie Mellon 3, Kean 0 (20-25, 21-25, 17-25)
Stec finished with eight kills and 11 digs as the Cougars (10-5) were swept by the host Tartans (9-5) in straight sets, 3-0. Harper totaled seven kills and 12 digs, while Jesse Larkin added seven kills. Calvano handed out 27 assists and collected seven digs, while Kortnee Nelson totaled 10 digs.
Erika Foose finished with nine kills, while Kayla Yew collected 18 digs for CMU.
Head Coach Don Perkins and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 22nd, in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational against Muskingum University at 11:00 a.m. and Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.
