SOMERSET, N.J. (10/12/18)- Graduate student Sara Ridgway was honored on Thursday afternoon by the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey (CAANJ) as the recipient of the Outstanding Student-Athlete Award for the 2017-2018 year.
One male and one female student-athlete in each of the four CAANJ divisions (Division I, II, III, Junior College) is selected.
Ridgway graduated Summa Cum Laude in May of 2018 and is currently pursuing her Masters of Arts degree in Speech Pathology at Kean.
Last season, she was named an AVCA All-American honorable mention (first in program history), an AVCA All-Region first team selection, an All-ECAC honorable mention selection, the NJAC Player of the Year and an All-NJAC first team selection. The Barnegat, N.J. native totaled 380 kills, 141 total blocks, 128 block assists and 13 solo blocks in 38 matches as she helped the Cougars captured their first NJAC title since 2001. The Kean Female Athlete of the Year ranked second in the nation in total blocks (141) and 11th in hitting percentage (.372).
Off the court, she was a service specialist in the Kean Center for Leadership and Service and the Editor in Chief of the Tower (Kean Student Newspaper).
In the classroom, she was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American third team member, a CoSIDA Academic All-District first team member and a two time Kean Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ridgway had also been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma, Lambda Alpha Sigma, Lambda Pi Eta, and Mu Kappa Tu honors societies.
Ridgway is the first Cougar since football student athlete T.J. Denehy earned the Male Athlete of the Year award in 2012.
